Nothing but issues since day 1!

aquaholic29 7/6/2019

We spent a lot of money on this refrigerator when redoing our kitchen. I can get past the fact that the sides are black. However, I cannot get the freezer door to stay shut. It ices up constantly and shelves and drawers will not slide. It's a constant battle to pull ou the drawers. Things were replaced and still no luck. I take a trip back to the 1960's dan manuall defrost this piece of junk every month! Money wasted on this appliance. BEWARE!!!!

I never realized how happy I would be with a new fridge. So big and cold!!! Absolutely the best thing I have bought in a very long time. I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have this refrigerator.

Heartbroken!

CRuiz 6/11/2019

I am extremely heartbroken. I wish I would have read all these reviews BEFORE buying this awful thing! My husband and I have recently built a brand new home. I was so excited to have this beautiful custom kitchen until now! If I would have known this door issue, I would have never bought it. You can't push it in because then the doors won't open. Since the cabinets are complete, you cannot redo the cabinets but even if you could, I don't think it would help. I guess I am stupid because I thought buying a Kitchenaid product, I was buying quality. Boy was I wrong!

Good Looking Unit with Matching Cabinet Doors

tacmike 5/20/2019

We bought this unit primarily because it allowed us to install our matching cabinet doors panels on it. It is priced many $1,000's below the next available unit that allows cabinet doors to be attached. We also like the layout inside and the adjustability of the shelves. The freezer unit is spacious and very easy to find items. This unit costs $1,000 - $1,500 more than other comparable sized and units that do not allows us to attach our cabinet doors. We just hope it last a very long time for this extra investment. Like most refrigerator/freezers, this one makes some noises, but they are very low and not distracting like other units we have used.

Love-Love-Love this refrigerator

Darlene Wesbrook 5/16/2019

I bought 2 counter depth, Panel Ready Kitchen Aid Refrigerators. One is hooked up and we love it. French Doors are a godsend, great storage. Interior is easy to access, great lighting and the crisp drawers work great! The bottom freezer drawers are easy to use. If you are 88 years young as I am, throw out your old single door regular depth refrigerator and buy one of these.

Panel ready purchasers BEWARE

MHDMA 5/13/2019

we purchased this more expensive unit for our remodeled kitchen. It is not counter depth -- the doors jut out from the counter. The sides (and fridge) only come in black! So here we have a beautiful custom cabinet white kitchen with panels on this kitchenaid fridge to match with black door sides jutting out into the kitchen. No one has a black kitchen. There is no option for white or stainless. inconvenience.

Sleek design

JaneyG 4/25/2019

We recently moved and are going to be renovating the kitchen, we begrudgingly left our Kitchenaid appliances in with the sale of our last house. When purchasing new it was between Bosch and Kitchenaid as we have owned both and loved them. We decided to stick with Kitchenaid as they have great features and I love the black stainless look, much easier to keep clean than regular stainless and plenty of room in the counter depth fridge/freezer. I highly recommend Kitchenaid appliances!

So disappointed!

Lhn55 4/24/2019

I have waited all my life to have a built in refrigerator! I finally got the chance and went with Kitchenaid. The cost was over $3000, but I thought it was what I wanted. It does not fit the cabinet! The cabinet maker built it exactly to specs, but it sticks out almost 3.5 inches from the rest of the cabinets! It is awful. I can't buy another refrigerator at this point! My contractor is trying to come up with a fix, but I don't think it's possible. I expected much more than this from Kitchenaid!

EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED

TXAPP 2/6/2019

I felt compelled to write a review that was not bashing the refrigerator. I have been in the business for awhile so I think I know what I am talking about. 1) 100% COUNTER DEPTH FREESTANDING PANEL READY REFRIGERATOR. I believe most of the mistakes that people have encountered installing is they thought it was a true built in. IT IS NOT A BUILT IN it is FREESTANDING. Point I am trying to make is there are literally only 2 companies that make a TRUE FREESTANDING PANEL READY FRIDGE (JENNAIR is the other). So get your facts straight before you just bash a company to death.

Big Headache

ErinJC5 2/4/2019

This refrigerator has been more trouble than it's worth. I was excited to find a panel ready refrigerator within my budget but have had nothing but problems since buying it. It does not have a true integrated design which I was unaware of when I bought it. The openers manual that I received does not specify panel/handle installation which I have had to do extensive research on. Sides are black and stick out like a sore thumb against white cabinets. Inside shelves have large gap causing food to fall behind. Very disappointing product.

An Eyesore in My New Kitchen

DisappointedinKAadvertise 12/7/2018

VERY unhappy with this refrigerator. In the website photo it looks flush with the cabinet but that is impossible. To open the doors, it needs to protrude from the cabinet by 3.5 inches which looks awful since the only color it comes in is black. The other option is to leave almost 3 inches of space on either side which defeats the purpose of a "panel ready" integrated cabinet look. In other words, it is does NOT have zero clearance hinging like the high-end models. Neither my cabinet maker nor my appliance dealer nor I can figure out a configuration where this refrigerator would work. I would have returned it if they would have taken it back. It is a big negative in an otherwise beautiful new kitchen.

Problems

??!? 10/28/2018

Our refrigerator doors do not line up with the freezer drawer. Once the cabinets panels were installed you could see how off the alignment is. We are working with kitchen aid to fix this issue by getting us a replacement refrigerator.

Caveat Emptor

Jayf 10/2/2018

I go back every couple of months or so and read the reviews on this much misunderstood refrigerator. It drives me nuts to read all the complaints that this fridge is not counter depth. This is a true counter-depth fridge, with the cabinet being 24" deep, which is the standard for free standing counter depth fridges. Almost all counter-depth fridges (panelled or not) that are free standing have to have the doors extending beyond the edge of the cabinets so that they can open. There is currently only one CD fridge that will flush mount with panels, and that's a Fisher-Paykel, due to it's articulated hinges. It's unfortunate on the Kitchen Aid that the side panels and door edges are black, what with the popularity of white cabints, but that's the way it is. When shopping for a panel ready fridge, the customer needs to understand this, and the salesperson needs to explain this in detail to the prospective customer, to avoid the multiple disappointments expressed in all the reviews. If you want a fridge that takes custom panels, and will mount flush in a 36" opening, you need to look at units by Fisher-Paykel (the least expensive), SubZero, Thermador, etc. These are termed built in units. Give Kitchen Aid a break! Shop for your appliances where the salespeople know what they're talking about.

Just Ok

Alison from Calgary 9/24/2018

We purchased this fridge 18 months ago. Like and the reasons* we purchased the fridge: - panel ready* - inside water dispenser* - ice dispenser* Dislike: - glass shelves don't go all the way to the back of the fridge, food falls down the back, doesn't hold as much as our previous similar kitchenaid - have to keep the fridge setting warmer to keep veggies from freezing - French doors really bang when the fridge closes - deli tray is ok. Would be nice to have separators for this large drawer

Great Interior functional design

td46 8/12/2018

I bought this a few months ago. I really like the French door configuration since it has so much more easy access to every thing compared to the GE side by side that I had. The only thing I see that needs improvement is the shelf standards on the left and right sides. These standards need to have holes that are lower. This would allow the shelves to be placed lower. The center standard for shelves is OK, The slide out Deli shelf is great!

Not happy

JoAnnn 6/25/2018

I bought this panel ready refrigerator . My cabinetry in my kitchen is white as shown in the picture. When I received the refrigerator, the gaskets were black. Does not look good with the white panels. Chatted with a representative and was told this model only comes with black gaskets. Not happy. I suggested that they note it on the description but was told no because it only comes with black gaskets...very deceiving and disappointing

Practical and elegant!

tata1309 6/18/2018

We bought this KitchenAid refrigerator about a month ago. The unit is solid build and runs really quiet. It has a very practical layout with dedicated drawers for fruits, which is great to store boxed items like strawberries and tomatoes we get from the farmers' market. The freezer drawer is nicely divided into sections for easy sorting of frozen goods. We're very happy with this model!

Terrible! Do not buy

Newenglandmom 5/10/2018

I agree with all the other negative reviews. I bought this when I was looking for a higher end panel ready fridge. I thought I'd save money and bought this instead of the Sub Zero I had been interested in, opting to spend that money elsewhere in my new kitchen. Within 3 weeks of moving in we had the rubber door gasket fail not once, but TWICE. Like completely rip and fall off. The panels are constantly falling off due to the poor, cheap quality and poorly designed attachment brackets. The sides are black. The fridge sticks out of my white cabinetry (I was sort of ok with these two things but it's not ideal and was a surprise). Despite it sticking out like it is supposed to, to allow room for the doors to open fully, when the panels move (because the attachment is poor), it hits the surrounding cabinetry anyway and the door panels touch in the middle. My panels are now damaged from the rubbing. The shelves allow for things to fall behind and the water filter is nearly impossible to remove. Overall, the whole fridge is a terrible design. We decided to live with it and the next time we have a problem it is going. It is going to cost us around $10,000 to redo the cabinetry, panels and buy the Sub Zero we should have gotten in the first place. No problems with my other appliances including the panel ready dishwasher (different brand). The only good thing? The service from the store where we bought it is top-notch. Thankfully.

Seal & Gasket concerns?

Rich D 4/16/2018

I bought this gorgeously expensive food cooler a little over a year ago. In this time, the ice maker has stopped working and started again twice... No issues now, so crossing my fingers... I'm beside myself lately though, as my right door seal/Gasket seems to be split and the strip magnet falls out. The seal is also separated at the bottom of the door and seems to be either a defect, or simply cheap materials used. I have it held together with some small pieces of duct tape for now, and my wife is less than happy to say the least. No idea what to do next here... Hopefully I am the only one out there with this issue after paying $3,500 plus for this refrigerator/freezer ... suddenly very disappointed in an otherwise great operating machine.......

Agree with "Very Mad", MISLEADING

very mad too 12/26/2017

I received this refrigerator a week ago. Our cabinet maker built cabinets per Kitchen Aid specs, but the refrigerator doors will not open when the refrigerator is pushed back. It needs to protrude 2 1/2 to 3 inches to allow the doors to open. Your drawings, specs and photographs are very misleading. Our contractor and cabinet maker agree. When pulled out 2 1/2 to 3 inches, the black sides show and look horrible, and when the custom panels are applied, it will protrude even further. Our panels are off white. What is the point of having panel ready if the ugly sides show? I am now wondering if we will have the additional problem of weak hinges when panels are applied, as someone else has posted this problem. My nine year old Kenmore had better features, better built shelves with no spaces behind, more storage in the doors. There is much less usable space than my Kenmore of the same size.

DO NOT BUY!!! Worst quality and horrible service.

sad_panda 12/12/2017

Unlike some of the other reviewers I purchased this fridge with full knowledge of the external dimensions... This is just a terrible fridge. If I could give a negative star I would. The hinges are not strong enough to hold the weight of the door and bend easily. Even without panels/handles installed. I'm waiting on my 3rd set to be installed. 1) The hinges do not have adjusters so your cabinet installer need to get the panel mounting perfect on the first try. Which is all for not because once the hinges start bending there is no way to get the doors back in-line. 2) The center divider folds via a cam/striker setup... There is no adjusting this piece either and even with new hinges it barely works. As the hinges bend, the striker tabs go UNDER the cam and will not flip the divider. 3) The shelves have huge gaps at the back. Large enough for a standard soda or even jelly/pickle containers to drop down the back. 4) Finally, it's noisier then the 10 year old LG it replaced.

Working great after 3 months

Glowplugv 12/1/2017

After 3 months of operation I can say we are very happy with this refrigerator. It would have been 5 stars but for the installation related to the water line and electrical plug issue I documented in an earlier review with pictures. I have the frig set at the defaults (38/0 degrees F) per the manual. Compared to our old 1999 GE refrigerator, the fruit and vegetable storage is much better as the both fruit and veggies seem to stay fresh much longer. I don't miss the external ice dispenser as the in freezer ice drawer is convenient and we avoid the issues of the in door ice maker that seems to dominate negative reviews of those sorts of refrigs. Very quiet and doors open and close smoothly. Highly recommend the French Doors with bottom freezer as it puts the things you need daily at eye level. Our old refrigerator had the fruit/veggie bins at the bottom and it was pain to load and see what was there. I was able to get the Kitchenaid rebate and only wish it was EnergyStar rated so I could get a tax credit.

Well worth the money

Carol 1967 11/17/2017

We almost bought another fridge made in Australia that was completely built-in (fully integrated) for the same price. However, we like the fact that the doors on this Kitchenaid open all the way. Many "fully integrated" fridges do not. Hubby thought the idea of a French door fridge was a little silly but now that we've had it for 3 months, he LOVES how easy it is to find everything. The ice-maker holds much more ice than did our previous 48" top-of-the-line $10,000 side-by-side which makes him REALLY happy! Yes, small items will fall off the back of the two top glass shelves. Small items are hard to find on the top shelves of any fridge so simply store your small items (like juice drink cartons) on the bottom shelf where they are easier to find anyway. The freezer compartment does not hold much. Depending on the size of your family and how much you rely on frozen food, this could be an issue. One design suggestion: The cold water dispenser inside the fridge is a great idea. However, it should be on the right side not the left. Most people are right handed and it is a bit awkward holding the right and the left door opens just to get cold water.

6LuckyDucks 11/11/2017

We are now on our second refrigerator. The first one took 10-1/2 months with 6 or 7 service calls, new parts, sealing the door, changing gaskets, installing new rails (glides) on the bin - nothing worked. In the end the Protection Agreement finally authorized a replacement refrigerator. It was an extremely trying and frustrating experience. Since this is a Panel Ready unit, we wanted to be able to reuse our expensive panels that match the cabinetry; so we tried the next year's model. The first several months were relatively trouble-free. Then the ice build-up on the rails started to appear, the bin stuck and has to pulled with two-handed force to be able to access the ice at all. The tiny magnet which is designed to secure the ice bin to the main freezer drawer front is inadequately small and will not lock and hold in place. Beyond all this, the interior water dispenser drips and there is constant wiping. The refrigerator section is set at 38 degrees, as suggested, and often freezes food and drink items, i.e. cottage cheese, club soda, a jar of roasted red peppers, etc. I am now starting this service nightmare all over again with the second machine - hope it doesn't take another 10 months to be resolved. Save your sanity - Don't buy this model! t buy this machine.

MISLEADING

very mad 10/10/2017

Firstly called counter depth, but it isn't. Sold panel ready with perfectly flush built in images- it can't be done. Door hinge structure does not allow for a built in fridge. period.

Started with service call

Renovator 10/6/2017

I wanted counter depth and panel ready. This is the most affordable option. Unfortunately the refrigerator section was not cooling upon install and we had to get service. Still waiting on repair but hopefully it will work well from her on out.

Nice

9/23/2017

We did a kitchen reno and got first use of the new fridge unit in the middle of August. Since that time we've delightedly gotten to enjoy its features and there are no complaints to speak of at this particular time. I*t's huge.

Regarding black strips from the doors

9/20/2017

Have used this refrigerator several times for various clients, as well as myself - we have had the black sides painted to match the cabinetry - electrostatic painters can do this. Just make sure to remove everything from the freezer and fridge before painting if already installed.

Not so awful as these amateurs think

9/19/2017

This refrigerator will work if you have any common sense. The dimensions and rough openings are listed. I would bet that most of the custom kitchen cabinets were bought at a discount major retail dealer where the customer and the salesman had no clue about what they were doing. If you had a cabinet shop build your cabinets, you picked the wrong shop. I build houses and I build cabinets. I don't have a problem with this. It makes me laugh to read these reviews. You people are something.

Picture showing the wood panels is not this Refrigerator

9/11/2017

Watch if you are looking at this refrigerator. The picture with the wood panels is actually of one of their built in units not this cabinet depth model and this refrigerator will look totally different. I was looking at it online and glad I actually found one at a retail store to see what it really looked like. Because it really wasn't going to give the look I wanted and I didn't want to pay double the cost for the built in unit I want with a black stainless which looks nice. I was replacing an older Amana that has wood panels and had a stainless trim around the edge of the door. There are few units on the market now that you can put wood panels on and none of then give a great look since there is no trim on the door edge so you see 2.5" of the black color of the door edge and then the wood panel on the front. They really should change the picture to one of the actual refrigerator and not the built in unit as it is really misleading. The rating I gave is because of the looks not the refrigerator itself.

Worst fridge I have every owned

8/22/2017

It simply is the most ugly (black strips) and fragile (door handles) fridge I have ever seen. I would never recommend this to anyone - friend or not KitchenAid - get your act together!

Measure twice cut once!

7/22/2017

I just installed this model in my totally remodeled kitchen so I am going to focus on the install to provide some warnings for next buyer. My kitchen contractor (who does a lot of work with Kitchenaid appliances) created a cabinet for the normal counter depth. The problem is that there are water lines run along the back of the refrigerator. These are strong, stiff lines and instead of having a elbow to enter frig, they are bowed outward (see picture). The end result is that the frig cannot be moved closer to the back wall than 1.5 to 1.75 inches. You do not want to force these lines as they will not bend. Another depth eater is the electrical plug (second picture). It is right angle plug but it is at least 0.5 in high. There are flatter plugs that could have been added to the electrical line to save space. While not related to Kitchenaid, I would recommend that the open end of the water valve be directed to the left. In my case the water valve was slightly to the right and that made it difficult to coil the line. Just something to be aware of when you have the connections placed. The two Kitchenaid problems will require that we add wood strips to the current cabinet enclosure to build it out (fortunately it will work with the rest of the cabinets). We may even do a cut-out in the wall board so the water line can go bit into the wall. These are things you might not catch from the specs, so be sure to consider them in your install. Given we have only operated for 4 days, the frig is very quiet, ice making looks to be plentiful and the cold water feature is great. I highly recommend this non-through the door setup for ice as when I was reviewing the refrigerators the common complaint was the small size of the ice capacity and failures with the ice maker/delivery system. This configuration should provide the most reliability and is great for us since we have only two of us in the home. I'll report more on it when I've had it in operation for awhile.

Flaws in design

7/21/2017

I loved my previous built-in Kitchenaid refrigerator so when we remodeled another home, I ordered this "counter depth" one, unaware of the black sides which was going into my white kitchen. After having a hissy fit over that, I have finally gotten used to it. However, I just spent the past hour cleaning up a spilt chocolate pudding that ran down the entire back wall of my refrigerator. Whoever thought it was a good idea to NOT extend the glass shelves all the way to the back wall!!! There is a 2-3 inch gap that I have spent countless time trying to retrieve items that have fallen off the shelves. Thank God it wasn't fish because I would have had to trash the entire refrigerator. There is no way even after removing every drawer and shelf to get at the nooks and crannies to properly clean up the mess.

Gotta say I like I - the reviews are true, but it is NICE.

6/23/2017

I would carefully read the reviews. It's true that this is not a built-in looking refrigerator. It is counter depth but for the doors to open there's gonna be some of the black sides exposed. I'll try to post pictures later. But our white kitchen with a black island looks perfect with these exposed sides. It's a really useful refrigerator with lots of interior room and we love the water dispenser and the overall look. The one big negative it is loud for a refrigerator, in the sense that it always can be heard humming. Not terribly loud but constant and continuous gentle humming. Overall we still love it we paid her sears clearance price for it was certainly worth it.

Not worth the money

5/8/2017

Decent fridge, for the money these items should be alot better. Things could be better. Ice maker is slow and gasket around the door already torn for no reason. I have to call and get new one.

False Advertising

Adrienne 1/23/2017

We bought 7 (Yes, 7!) KitchenAid appliances for our newly built home. Three of them were panel ready. This refrigerator was the worst. The image displayed on the website is incorrect. The advertising implies that you will achieve a built-in look - you won't. To make matters worse, KitchenAid seems to be unapologetic to the concerns of its customers - the extra time, cost and creative measures they have to pursue to try to get this terribly designed appliance to fit in with their kitchen designs. My cabinet installer is still wrestling with this. I will tell him about the 1/4" panels that another poster suggested. I wish this feedback was available when we originally purchased prior to construction. I would have gone with another manufacturer. I WILL NEVER buy another KitchenAid appliance. I've already posted on BBB. If you are considering this appliance, please know that it is not as advertised.

DESCRIBED AND ADVERTISED INCORRECTLY

1/16/2017

I am having the same issues as what other reviewers have described. This refrigerator IS NOT COUNTER DEPTH READY! it clearly states in the item description "This 72-inch refrigerator is three inches taller than a standard counter-depth refrigerator" I called customer service and they tell me that the dimensions are clearly listed in the guide. however, even if a contractor followed the dimensions their is no way for the doors to open because when the doors open they extend wider than the refrigerator. This would mean this refrigerator would have to be free standing. the only way to use this refrigerator in a counter depth scenario would mean to have any cabinets to the left or right of the refrigerator be 24" in depth and allow the refrigerator stick out like a soar thumb. the review left in December shows the issue perfectly if a kitchen is designed with a pull out pantry. the pantry can not be accessed from one side because the refrigerator is sticking out past the cabinets. To reiterate my point, even if the cabinets to the left or right are custom fabricated to the dimensions of this refrigerator a gap of about 3" would have to be left to allow the hinge of the doors swing open. I did not design a custom kitchen to have gaps in between my cabinets. To throw salt on the wound, the ice maker takes way too long to fill the ice tray. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and consumer reports. The fact that most of the reviews describe the same issue shows fault resides with the manufacture and description of this product.
